Statistics from World Health Org state the number one health issue in 2030 will be depression. I say it’s already an issue. Talk to any high school guidance counselor or on staff therapist, they will tell you how busy they are. Look at what is happening all around kids that exacerbate the underlying issues: school shootings, drugs, social media, fewer personal connections, and increased push to succeed. The past four years have been brutal as I’ve watched my beautiful, creative daughter suffer though both of these issues. Struggling to make it to school, keep up, and stay focused. As her anxiety mounted so did mine and often found myself turning to meditation, compassion and gratitude practice. Occasionally she would jump in. Starting this practice early, offering coping skills to kids, is critical. According to Mindworks: Even though today’s kids exhibit elevated levels of restlessness, stress and anxiety, only 1.6% of children in the U.S. meditate. Yet several studies suggest that kids who practice mindfulness tend to develop positive traits such as increased self-control, better attentiveness in class, and more empathy and respect for others. In addition, meditation may help children manage challenging conditions such as stress, depression, ADHD and hyperactivity.
